My Art Essentials

Many people on my tumblr ask what pens and artistic tools I use to get my drawings the way they are, so I thought I would pop them all on here so you can browse at your leisure.

Most used:

  • Artine 'Drawing System' Pens in
    • 0.05
    • 0.1
    • 0.4
  • Micron Pigma Pen in 0.8
  • Faber-Castell Pencil in 2B

Artline pens are not on the cheap side (£1 per pen) but they provide a clean line and from their wide range of sizes, can be used for detailed pieces to block color. I personally adore these pens and I am forever buying more. Micron pens are as good as Artline and can be a tiny bit cheaper, I chose a 0.8 as the Artline's had ran out, and I was not disappointed in the quality. Faber-Castell pencils are never far in a stationary shop and are super!

Handy supplies:

  • Posca Marker 2.5m in
    • White
    • Purple
    • Black
    • Green
    • Neon Pink
  • Elephant cutting knife
  • (boring) Ruler
  • (cheap, naff) Paintbrushes in
    • I have many sizes of paintbrushes so basically every size there is ◕ ◡ ◕

These are my tools and markers that can add just a cute little heart here or a nice straight line there. Posca markers are wonderful and I would highly recommend them for adding bursts of color and even doodling on the front of your sketchbook (waterproof and smudge free!) My Elephant cutting knife was super cheap (30p!) so I wasn't expecting it to be long lasting and sharp for that matter, but it has proved me wrong and does its job perfectly! Paintbrushes I shall not go into detail with as they are not even branded for starters. Personally buying paintbrushes can be very expensive (I've seen some for £10) so I often choose the ones in packets of 5 or 3 for about £1 and to be honest, they do fine for what I use them for: small watercolors etc.

Adding color:

  • Start Material Gouache
  • Specialist Watercolors
  • Yoya Coloring Pencils

These are the supplies I don't use everyday so I don't spend lots of money on them. Gouache is great at adding bright and somewhat solid colors to illustrations and is popular for its watercolor like ability to spread but its brightness like poster paints. I purchased my gouache from the child's section of a stationary shop and the paints work absolutely fine! My watercolors are too a cheap brand but do their job well. I have had many different brands of coloring pencils in my life, from fancy expensive artist ones to cheap child's ones. I've found that I much prefer the child's version of coloring pencils as they are affordable and give a more vivid color. The problem with cheap pencils is that they have the tendency to fall apart when sharpening, but if you want to overcome this issue use a cutting knife to sharpen them with instead ◡‿◡

Also:

I use my Bamboo tablet to add in lines and/or directly sketch onto Photoshop. I don't use this as much as other artists as I find it to not give me as much detail as drawing directly onto paper and scanning it into my PC, but nevertheless, its an ace product.

I hope you enjoyed this small insight into my (very large!) pencil case, and I never thought people would even look at my silly doodles, bare enough ask me what supplies I use, so thank you! Please feel free to comment and/or follow me!
