Tasty Type - Century Gothic

Back in primary school, this was my go-to ICT homework font. I have been seeing it out and about this past week so I thought I would delve into this nostalgic little typeface.

I’d say its been about 10 years since I’ve clicked on “Century Gothic” in my font menu, it feels strange, yet exciting. Many dive towards this sans-serif typeface due to its elegant geometric styling; your eyes notice the circles paired with straight lines and sharp angles. Created originally by Americans named Morris Fuller Benton and Sol Hess, Monotype produced the font in 1991. Due to its worldwide availability (85% of all computers) it is a favoured font choice amongst novices and designers alike.  Century Gothic is built upon the ideals of the font Futura, remaking it for a digital world. In comparison to Futura, Century Gothic has a much taller x-height, giving it a whole new lease of life. I think the coolest thing about this week’s font is that it uses 30% less printer ink than if you used Ariel or something similar (say Helvetica), in a world where our resources are limited and human waste is causing major damage, this font provides a greener alternative. The U.S. Government’s ‘PrintWise’ campaign states that Century Gothic along with Garamond are two fonts that could save on cost and the planet. U.S. Government workers are hinted to use the fonts in all their printed works.

The James Bond film Casino Royale uses Century Gothic as its primary title.

Bau Meister magazine; this German publication has adopted a bold version of the font. Personally I feel this weight choice gives the magazine a snazzy contemporary appeal.

This free typeface available on dafont.com pairs well with Century Gothic

(maybe a bit harsh, but it just reminds me of primary school)
