5 THINGS ON MY DESK

Okay I have to admit something. This post was going to be a full-blown desk tour right? BUT the lighting was really bad the day I took the photos, that it just didn’t do my creative space any justice. I wanted to show it off the best light ya’ know? Never defeated, I have still managed to post something related to my doodle abode.

Here are five of the many random items I have lying/pinned/stuck/placed around my desk. They are items that inspire, look groovy or just simply make me smile. As I cherish odd bits-and-bobs in general, don’t hesitate to share your loveable crap you have gathered over the years, I would love to see!

CREATIVE BOOKS I REACHED FOR @ UNI

It’s that time of the year again where uni is about to begin. Whether you are starting freshers, or are ready to tackle your final year, it’s an exciting time and one in which we should get stocked up on our supplies! This post covers some incredible books. They have helped me out in my uni days studying a creative course and hopefully they can help you out too!

THE PAST YEAR

Excuse the Spongebob timecard, I found it funny and wanted to use it. But this is no laughing matter. I have been terrible, awful even; I haven’t been posting at all for about a year. I have an excuse though and a pretty decent one at that. I know you are shaking your head thinking, “Amy, how could you” but it’s true! I’ve been very busy! Now where to begin…

UPDATE!

Yes, I am still around! Sorry for the lack of updates, but as I am now in my final year of uni, everything is go-go-go! I’ve been focusing on a billion new projects and ideas, which means I don’t have too much time to keep this little corner of the web updated. Below are a few things that I’ve been scribbling down, some you will see more of in the future, others are just doodles.

Tasty Type - Avenir

Yes! Finally! I am back with another typical Tuesday tasty type! I know I know, it has been far too long, but settle down, as this week we can get back on track with a pretty popular font named Avenir.

Alphabet image from: identifont.com

According to typewolf.com, Avenir is one of the most popular fonts of 2014. The website asked 41 big name designers about their favourite typefaces and Avenir was ranked one of the highest. Its ageless appeal comes from its geometric sans-serif styling, which doesn’t give it too much edge but allows it to see comfortably with the best. Swiss designer, Adrian Frutiger birthed this font in 1988 and considers it to be his best work, quoting “my masterpiece”. Nowadays the typeface can be found in six weights, which has expanded on the family of three back in 1988. You can come across roman and oblique versions.

Oh hey would you look at that! A font we have already covered in Tasty Type! Click here to read about Avenir’s cousin, Century Gothic (a shameless plug)

Capitalised ‘Q’ features a horizontal tail
Double story lowercase ‘a’
Flat topped vertices
Pointed bottom on capital ‘M’
Centred axis
Lowercase ‘j’ and ‘y’ have curved tails

Printed Pages, Spring 2014. I love the website of ‘It’s Nice That’ and its quarterly magazine was revamped using the font of Avenir. Featuring interviews and impeccable design, this publication offers visual pleasure on all levels.

Brooklyn/Montreal Art Event. This poster was for an art event in 2013. Using Avenir as its lead act, it features a lovely red to blue gradient.

Pair the old style serif of Garamond with the younger, contemporary face of Avenir. A match made in typographic heaven.

I really, really, really like this font. It just ticks all the right boxes!
