My graphic design tutor suggested that I watch the documentary "Helvetica" and I am so glad I did!
The documentary film is about the famous typeface 'Helvetica' and shows how much it has influenced our modern day society; the good and the bad. Many believe it is the holy mother of type, yet others think it is overly used and now blends into every other sans-serif typeface. I honestly did not notice how often Helvetica was used in the world today and was shocked at how many companies and enterprises had used the script. The day after watching the documentary I walked into town, and on my way I came across more than 5 uses of the style alone! It's very easy to spot when you know what you're looking for.

Companies that have took to the typeface:

Common public uses:

Helvetica was created in 1957 by Max Miedinger. Arial in 1842 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders. One to change typographic history, the other to be used for IBM.
Here is a simple spotters guide to distinguish the two:

If you are into typography, graphic design or just want to have that little bit more knowledge about the world go and watch this documentary. It will make you notice the small things and appreciate the power of simple little letters.
