A DAY AT THE TATE MODERN

Before we begin I bet you’re wondering “ooh Amy that header image is a lil’ different than what you normally do” and you are very much correct my friend. You see, I love graphic design but seem to have been focusing primarily on my illustration work for the time being. So today I felt like branching out and playing around a bit, get my old designery juices flowing you know? Aye, so there we go, this blog is a playground for me and I hope you enjoy what develops!

To the post – A last minute family trip took us to London for the day. We had heard that the Tate Modern had a re-vamp and thus we headed on over to see what the old power station had to offer. I personally love the Tate; it’s a mixture of weird and wonderful with the gems in-between. So here's what we walked around and scratched our heads about.

I'm Back!

Hooray! I finally have Internet installed so I can get back into blogging. It has been a very fast paced and busy few weeks so thank you for being patient!

Paper Pick-Ups #1

Design is everywhere and anywhere, thus I often find myself picking up a few paper goods when out and about. If the type, coloring, layout or simple illustration catches my eye, my hand will come along a whisk it away. Here are a few things that now reside in my humble paper pile.

1 - "Reserve & Collect" found in Waterstones

Browsing Waterstones is a common thing I find myself doing. It’s a shame the Leicester store doesn’t stock more art/design books, alas. Anyways! This lil’ A5 slip caught my eye due to the punchy hand rendered type which features as a key part of the flyer. I liked it, that is all.

2 - Wagamama

Okay so Wagagamas have their A-game when it comes to menu aesthetic and all things food. Their design is on point, and I do aim on nicking their dessert menu one day, as that has some fab red foiling on the cover. Seen here is one of their placemats, I love the layout; so simple but not too white and the photograph with the cross-section of a ramen bowl is pure genius. Simplicity and contemporary design are at one in Waga’s

3 - "FREE" from Yo!Sushi

Another food based promotional piece here. Yo!Sushi do have some real funky stuff going on in their design department. This particular postcard sized flyer is for a free hand-roll if you bet on Japan winning the football world cup (lets face it, that’s not going to happen anytime soon) This certain flyer caught my eye due to the fat typography and the fade which is implied on the “FREE” the further the eye travels. This use of type has actually inspired some of my work, so hey, well done Yo!

"This Is Not My Hat"

This Is Not My Hat - Jon Klassen

I was perusing the children's book section in WHSmith looking for a gift, when I came across this brilliant little number. This Is Not My Hat is about a little fish that steals a big fish's hat, and tries to get away with it. It caught my eye due to the dainty and rare image making which (to me) make the book. The illustrator come writer, Jon Klassen, is known for his humorous and textured illustration work which really come alive in this publication.

The Century Schoolbook typeface is a perfect fit for both of Klassen's illustrations and its audience.

Where has his hat gone?!

My favourite section of the book is when the big fish notices that its teeny hat has gone missing. As you turn the pages his eyes do all the talking, and I think we all feel like the last expression shown above from time to time.

Most of the story is layed out over double page spreads. This gives the images a sense of depth, like that of the big black abyss in which these creatures live. The large fish fills most of the pages, giving him a wonderful sense of scale in comparison to his tiny thief. 

"Where the plants are big and tall and close together!"

I absolutely love the underwater plant patterns that Jon has created for the book. They are present within the story and on the books inside cover. Klassen integrates texture brilliantly into his images, producing gentle illustrations.

As I said above, I was looking for a gift. This is the gift. I am almost sad to give it away.

Doodle Diaries

Hello! I have returned after a fairly long disappearance, and I know I know, i'm terrible! Since i've been gone I have altered my illustration style slightly and learnt some new tricks along the way. I am really enjoying doodling at the moment, so here is a little update on some new scribbles of mine.

Mooses! A pretty cool idea from a follower

As you can see, I have become an avid fan of drawing with ink and adding color on Photoshop. I find the ink gives a lot more personality to my lines that I struggled to get with fineliner.
